Ilulissat Icefjord | Greenland

Located on the west coast of Greenland, 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, Greenland’s Ilulissat Icefjord is the sea mouth of Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the few glaciers through which the Greenland ice cap reaches the sea. Sermeq Kujalleq is one of the fastest and most active glaciers in the world.

Ilulissat Icefjord is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Prior to 1983 Greenland was a Danish colony since 1814. The flag during this time was the red field with white cross Danish flag.

The modern flag of independent Greenland designed by Thue Christiansen was adopted after its independence in 1985. The flag of Greenland is the only Nordic country that doesn’t feature a Nordic cross.

The world's largest island is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark. When you look at this postcard you wouldn’t think that the climate in Greenland is extremely harsh. More than 80% of the island is covered by an ice cap 4km thick in places.   

The card shows sheep herding near Tasiusaq in the most southern part of Greenland. Compared to the rest of the country it has a relatively mild climate. Tasiusaq is within the boundairies of Unesco World Heritage site  inscribed under the name Kujataa Greenland: Norse and Inuit Farming at the Edge of the Ice Cap. The landscape represents the earliest introduction of farming to the Arctic, and the Norse expansion of settlement beyond Europe.

(right) Jørgen Brønlund was a Greenlandic polar explorer. He participated in two Danish expeditions to Greenland in the early 20th century. He died in 1907 at age 30.

Having been ruled by Denmark–Norway for centuries, Greenland became a Danish colony in 1814. Today Greenland is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark. With a population of only 56,000 it is the least densely populated country in the world.

The name of the country in Greenlandic is Kalaallit Nunaat meaning "land of the Kalaallit", the indigenous Greenlandic Inuit people who inhabit the country's western region.

The ice cap or inland ice covers up to 85 percent of Greenland's total area, and extends 2,500 km from north to south and up to 1,000 km from east to west.

Greenland is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark. It is, by area, the world's largest island. With a population of 56,749 (2012 estimate) it is the least densely populated dependency or country in the world.

The Greenland National Museum was established in the mid-1960'ies as one of the first museums in Greenland. The museum has nation-wide obligations within archaeology, recent history, art, and handicrafts. The museum maintains the central files about preserved ruins, graveyards, buildings etc. and participate in nature conservation and townplanning.
