Flags of the World | Burkina Faso

Kaesong Namdaemun | North Korea

The Kaesong Namdaemun is the south gate of the old walled city of Kaesong, North Korea. Constructed between 1391 and 1393, it is the only one of the original seven citadel gates to survive mostly intact into the present.

Historic Monuments and Sites in Kaesong is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The site consists of 12 separate components. One of these is Kaesong Namdaemun.

Roman Walls of Lugo | Spain

The Roman walls of Lugo were constructed in the 3rd century and are still largely intact, stretching over 2 kilometers around the historic centre of Lugo in Galicia (Spain).

Roman Walls of Lugo is a UNESCO World Heritage site. According to UNESCO, the wall is the finest example of late Roman fortifications in western Europe.

The 'City of Caves', on an island in the Sea of Oman close to Bombay, contains a collection of rock art linked to the cult of Shiva. The Elephanta Caves are a network of sculpted caves located on Elephanta Island in Mumbai Harbour.

The Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory  is located 19 km south of Saint Petersburg. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments.

Wilhelm von Struve was the founder and its first director. We know him from The Struve Geodetic Arc, another UNESCO World Heritage site.

Denmark is Europe's oldest kingdom and its flag - the oldest European flag - was officially adopted in 1625.

The red flag with a white cross is known as the Dannebrog, or Danish Cloth. According to Danish legend, the Dannebrog descended from the skies during a battle in Estonia on June 15, 1219.

Belvedere Castle | Germany

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries the small Thuringian town of Weimar witnessed a remarkable cultural flowering, attracting many writers and scholars, notably Goethe and Schiller. Amoreira Aqueduct | Portugal

The Amoreira Aqueduct is a 16th-century aqueduct that spans the Portuguese municipality of Elvas, bringing water into the fortified city.

Garrison Border Town of Elvas and its Fortifications is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The site also contains the Amoreira aqueduct, built to enable the stronghold to withstand lengthy sieges.

Crypt at the Colonia Guell | Spain


Postcard
Located near Barcelona, the crypt of the church at the Colonia Guell was classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2005. Antoni Gaudi undertook this work as a testing-ground for the future construction of the Sagrada Familia.

The Church of Colònia Güell is an unfinished work by Antoni Gaudí. It was built as a place of worship for the people in a manufacturing suburb in Santa Coloma de Cervelló.

Seven of Gaudi’s works were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO:
- Palacio Güell
- Casa Vicens
- Nativity Façade and Crypt of the Sagrada Familia
- Crypt at the Colònia Güell.

Struve Geodetic Arc | Finland

The Struve Geodetic Arc is a chain of survey triangulations stretching from Hammerfest in Norway to the Black Sea, through ten countries and over 2,820 km.

This helped to calculate the exact size and shape of the planet and marked an important step in the development of earth sciences and topographic mapping. Oravivuori is one of the six measuring points that are located in Finland.

Mada'in Saleh archaeological site | Saudi Arabia

Mada'in Saleh, or Al-Hij,r is an archaeological site located in Saudi Arabia. Formerly known as Hegra it is the largest conserved site of the civilization of the Nabataeans south of Petra in Jordan. It features well-preserved monumental tombs with decorated facades dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD.

Al-Hijr Archaeological Site (Madâin Sâlih) is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Fort bij Uithoorn | Netherlands

Extending 135 km around the city of Amsterdam, this defence line, built between 1883 and 1920, is the only example of a fortification based on the principle of controlling the waters.

The world's highest post office | India

Located in the Himalayas in northern India, the Spiti Valley is one of the highest inhabited places on Earth. Characterised by barren mountains, treacherous passes and serpentine rivers, the high-altitude, cold desert landscape looks almost otherworldly.

At an elevation of 4,500m, the tiny post office in the village of Hikkim connects a cluster of small villages in this isolated region to the rest of the world.

Archaeological site of Hedeby | Germany

The archaeological site of Hedeby consists of the remains of an emporium – or trading town – containing traces of roads, buildings, cemeteries and a harbour dating back to the 1st and early 2nd millennia CE. The site was an important Viking Age (8th to the 11th centuries) trading settlement located in today's Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

Because of its unique situation between the Frankish Empire in the South and the Danish Kingdom in the North, Hedeby became a trading hub between continental Europe and Scandinavia.

Archaeological Border complex of Hedeby and the Danevirke is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
