The island of Delos | Greece

The island of Delos is located near Mykonos, in the centre of the Cyclades archipelago. The island is one of the most important mythological, historical, and archaeological sites in Greece.

Delos is a small and rocky island but was considered as “the most sacred of all islands” in ancient Greek culture. One of the excavations on the island is the Terrace of the Lions, dedicated to Apollo. Originally, there were up to a dozen big squatting guardian cats lining the Sacred Way; today, only seven remain.

Delos is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Lofoten is an archipelago in northern Norway, located within the Arctic Circle. The archipelago is known for a distinctive scenery with mountains and peaks, open sea and sheltered bays, beaches and untouched lands.

Niokolo-Koba National Park | Senegal

The one million hectares of protected land makes the Niokolo-Koba National Park the largest park in Senegal. The park is known for its abundance of wildlife. This includes a large population of elephants, lions, leopards, chimpanzees, baboons, hippos and the Western giant eland.

Béguinage de Kortrijk | Belgium

Béguinages are architectural ensembles composed of houses, churches, ancillary buildings and green spaces. In these closed communities, founded in the 13th century, the béguines (women who lived a religious life, but without any formal vows) could live and worship in a quiet environment.

Flemish Béguinages is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The beguinage in Kortrijk is one of 13 that are listed. Here you see the beguinages in Turnhout and in Brugge.

The Taj Mahal, meaning "Crown of the Palaces" is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the Indian city of Agra. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, to house the tomb of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

Taj Mahal is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Hailongtun Tusi Fortress | China

Located in the mountainous areas of south-west China, this site encompasses remains of several tribal domains whose chiefs were appointed by the central government as ‘Tusi’, hereditary rulers from the 13th to the early 20thcentury. The Derinkuyu underground city is an ancient multi-level underground city in the Derinkuyu district in Nevşehir Province, Turkey. Extending to a depth of approximately 60 metres, it is large enough to have sheltered as many as 20,000 people together with their livestock and food stores. It is the largest excavated underground city in Turkey and is one of several underground complexes found across Cappadocia.

Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Subterranean city of Derinkuyu is one of the 7 locations that comprises this site.

The series of 111 out of the 937 known archaeological pile-dwelling sites in six countries around the Alpine and sub-alpine regions of Europe is composed of the remains of prehistoric settlements dating from 5,000 to 500 BC which are situated under water, on lake shores, along rivers or in wetlands. Fifty-six of the sites are located in Switzerland.

The Gilbert and Ellice Islands were a British protectorate from 1892 and colony from 1916 until 1 January 1976, when the islands were divided into two colonies which became independent nations shortly after: Kiribati and Tuvalu.
