Vernazza is one of the five towns that make up the Cinque Terre region, a coastal area within Liguria, in the northwest of Italy. Cinque Terre comprises five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

Portovenere, Cinque Terre, and the Islands (Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto) is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Skara Brae | United Kindom - Scotland

Skara Brae is a stone-built Neolithic settlement, located on the Bay of Skaill on the west coast of Mainland, the largest island in the Orkney archipelago of Scotland. Consisting of eight clustered houses, it was occupied from roughly 3180 BC to about 2500 BC and is Europe's most complete Neolithic village.

Heart of Neolithic Orkney is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The group of Neolithic monuments on Orkney consists of a large chambered tomb (Maes Howe), two ceremonial stone circles (the Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar) and a settlement (Skara Brae), together with a number of unexcavated burial, ceremonial and settlement sites.

Vatnajökull National Park is one of three national parks in Iceland. It encompasses all of Vatnajökull glacier and extensive surrounding areas. Vatnajökull is Europe's largest glacier outside the arctic, with a surface area of 8,100 km2.

Augsburg fountain | Germany

The water management system of the city of Augsburg has evolved in successive phases from the 14th century to the present day.

It includes a network of canals, water towers dating from the 15th to 17th centuries, which housed pumping machinery, a water-cooled butchers’ hall, a system of three monumental fountains and hydroelectric power stations, which continue to provide sustainable energy today.

Flowerpot Island is an island in Georgian Bay, in the Canadian province of Ontario. The island is a popular tourist destination, with camping facilities and hiking trails. The name of the island comes from two rock pillars on its eastern shore, which look like flower pots. These pots are some sort of sea stacks, a vertical column or columns of rock in the sea near a coast, formed by wave erosion.

Fort Zeelandia | Suriname

Fort Zeelandia is a fortress in Paramaribo, Suriname. In 1640 the French built a wooden fort on the spot, which during the British colonial days was reinforced and became Fort Willoughby. It was taken by the Dutch in 1667 and renamed Fort Zeelandia.

Situated to the west and north of the Fort Zeelandia property are some officer’s residences built in timber, that stand in contrast to the stone mass of the fortress.

Historic Inner City of Paramaribo is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Serra da Capivara National Park | Brazil

Serra da Capivara National Park is a national park in the Northeastern region of Brazil. The area has many prehistoric paintings. This area has the largest and the oldest concentration of prehistoric sites in the Americas.

Pedra Furada, meaning pierced rock, is an important collection of over 800 archaeological sites. These include hundreds of rock paintings dating from circa 12,000 tot 60,000 years ago.

Serra da Capivara National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Lion of Babylonia | Iraq

The archaeological site of Babylon is located 85 km south of Baghdad. The Lion of Babylon is a stone sculpture that can be found in this ancient city. The statue was built by the Chaldean Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II (605-562 BC) and is made out of black basalt stone.

Babylon is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Katholiko Monastery | Greece

Katholiko monastery is located on the Greek island of Crete at a short distance from the sea. It is considered the oldest monastery in Crete, as its origins date back tot the 6th or 7th century. The Catholicon of the monastery Katholiko is carved into the rock.

In the 16th century, when the coasts of Crete were targeted by pirates, the monks were forced to move to a more remote place, so they abandoned Katholiko. The monastery is now ruined and can be accessed through a trail that that starts from the nearby monastery Gouverneto.

Bakhchisaray Cave Monastery | Russia

The Assumption Monastery of the Caves is located in Crimea, near Bakhchysarai. It is a cave monastery carved out of a cliff dating back to the 15th century.

In 1921 the monastery was closed by the Soviet government. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Ukrainian independence the monastery was reopened to the public in 1993.

One of these five areas is the Langa of Barolo. This is one of the most renowned of Piedmont’s tourist attractions. The area is a vast 360° vineyard, dotted here and there with castles and medieval hamlets.

Afar: where it all began | Ethiopia

The Awash valley in Ethiopia contains one of the most important groupings of paleontological sites on the African continent. The remains found at the site, the oldest of which date back at least 4 million years, provide evidence of human evolution which has modified our conception of the history of humankind.

The most spectacular discovery came in 1974, when 52 fragments of a skeleton were found. The skeleton became known as Lucy.

Lower Valley of the Awash is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Lower Awash Valley paleo-anthropological site is located 300 km northeast of Addis Ababa, in the west of the Afar Depression. It covers an area of around 150 km2.

San Miguel de Allende | Mexico

San Miguel de Allende is located 274 km from Mexico City. The fortified town, first established in the 16th century to protect the Royal Route inland, reached its apogee in the 18th century when many of its outstanding religious and civic buildings were built in the style of the Mexican Baroque.

Protective town of San Miguel and the Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Jesuit sanctuary is situated 14 km from San Miguel.
