Flags of the World | Botswana


Postcard
The national flag of Botswana was adopted in 1966 to replace the Union Jack after the country gained independence that year.

It is one of the few African flags that utilises neither the colours of the Pan-Africanist movement nor the colours of the country's leading political party.

Elephant Stables at Hampi | India

Hampi, a small village in Northern Karnataka, India, was the last capital of the great Hindu kingdom of Vijayanagar. Hampi had very wealthy kings who built many temples and palaces.

The Elephant Stables is a major tourist attraction. This is a long structure with a row of domed chambers which were used to keep royal elephants.

Group of Monuments at Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Three Mile Island | USA

Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station (TMI) is a nuclear power plant located on on a small island in the Susquehanna River just south of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

The Three Mile Island accident that occurred on March 28, 1979 was the partial meltdown of reactor number 2. It was the most significant accident in U.S. commercial nuclear power plant history. In 1985, Three Mile Island reopened, minus the one damaged reactor. Three Mile Island nuclear power plant is set to shutdown in 2021.

Flags of the World | Montenegro

Following the breakup of Yugoslavia, the republics of Serbia and Montenegro together established a federation known as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which was renamed to the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro in 2003. On the basis of an independence referendum held in May 2006, Montenegro declared independence.

The flag of Montenegro was officially adopted on 13 July 2004.

The Bolívar Square (Spanish: Plaza de Bolívar) is the main square of the Colombian capital Bogotá. Catedral Primada de Bogotá is a Roman Catholic cathedral located at Bolivar Square. The cathedral measures 5,300 square meters; the biggest in Colombia and one of the biggest ones in South America.

Flags of the World | United Kingdom - Wales

While the other countries of the UK, Scotland, Ireland and England, are represented in the Union Jack, Wales isn’t. Wales instead stands alone with its much more detailed, unusual flag of a red dragon on a green and white background.

The proud and ancient battle standard of the Welsh is The Red Dragon. The dragon has been associated with Wales for a long time, but its origins and why it is on the flag are unclear.

Landscapes of Dauria is a UNESCO World Heritage site for both Russia and Mongolia. The Dauria landscapes contains substantial and relatively undisturbed areas of different types of steppe, ranging from grassland to forest, as well as many lakes and wetlands.

Landscapes of Dauria is a resting place for 3 million migratory birds and home to rare animal species such as the endangered tarbagan marmot, the white-naped crane and the swan goose.

St Mary's Cathedral - Hildesheim | Germany

St Mary's Cathedral in Hildesheim is a medieval Roman Catholic cathedral, built between 1010 en 1020. The cathedral was completely destroyed during a WWII air raid and rebuilt from 1950 to 1960.

St. John the Baptist Church is a Greek orthodox church near Al-Maghtas, the site of the baptism of Jesus Christ located in the Jordan Valley. Baptism Site “Bethany Beyond the Jordan” (Al-Maghtas) is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

“Bethany beyond the Jordan” is of immense religious significance to the majority of denominations of Christian faith, who have accepted this site as the location where Jesus of Nazareth was baptised by John the Baptist.

Budelli Island | Italy

The 'Maddalena Archipelago' is a group of islands in the Strait of Bonifacio between Corsica (France) and north-eastern Sardinia (Italy). The archipelago consists of seven main islands and numerous small islets. One of these is Budelli.

Budelli is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It is especially renowned for its Spiaggia Rosa (meaning "Pink Beach"), which owes its typical color to microscopic fragments of corals and shells.

Jodensavanna | Suriname

Jodensavanne (Dutch for "Jewish Savanna") was an agricultural community in Suriname, South America established by Jews fleeing persecution in Spain.

In 1639, the English government allowed Sephardi Jews from the Netherlands, Portugal and Italy to settle the area. The Jewish community was granted some autonomy and developed a sugar-cane plantation economy.

Zimbabwe was under the British rule from 1895 to 1980, during this period it was called Southern Rhodesia. As soon as the country gained its independence, it changed its name to Zimbabwe and adopted a new flag to signify a new beginning as an independent democratic nation.

Srebarna Nature Reserve | Bulgaria

The Srebarna Nature Reserve is a freshwater lake located in northeastern Bulgaria, near the village of the same name. The lake is the breeding ground of almost 100 species of birds, many of which are rare or endangered.

Poverty Point | USA

Poverty Point State Historic Site is a prehistoric earthwork constructed by the Poverty Point culture. The site contains earthen ridges and mounds, built by indigenous people between 1700 and 1100 BC (that is 3400 years ago!). The earthworks are named after a 19th century plantation on the property.

The card itself looks a bit peculiar dont you think? It is actually an aerial photograph of the site. Most of this site is hidden in the earth!

Monumental Earthworks of Poverty Point is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Palmeral of Elche | Spain

The old city of Elche is basically built within a forest of 200,000 palm trees. One tree for every inhabitant! Its origins date back to the time the Muslim city of Elche was erected, towards the end of the tenth century A.C., when much of the Iberian peninsula was Arab.

The Palmeral of Elche is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Palmeral is an oasis, a system for agrarian production in arid areas. It is also a unique example of Arab agricultural practices on the European continent.

The Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai is a collection of 19th century Victorian Neo Gothic public buildings and 20th century Art Deco buildings. This collection of the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco buildings are set around the Oval Maidan, a large recreational ground in Mumbai.

Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai is a Unesco World Heritage site. Bombay High Court is an example of the 19th century Victorian Gothic buildings.
