Today’s Vergina (Ancient Aigai), in the foothills of Mt. Pieria, was the first capital of ancient kingdom of Macedonia, called Aigai. The first excavations on the site were carried out in the 19th century and were resumed in the 1930's.

Archaeological Site of Aigai (modern name Vergina) is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
