Dubrovnik is a Croatian city situated on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The old city, once known as the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’ is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Gustavia, capital of Saint Barthélemy

Gustavia is the main town and capital of the island of Saint Barthélemy (Saint-Barth). It was named after King Gustav III of Sweden. Saint-Barth is the only Caribbean island which was once a Swedish colony for a longer period. Today Saint Barthélemy is an overseas collectivity of France.

2017 issue for Europa-stamp theme castles. The stamp shows both the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau and Chambord. Both are part of Unesco World Heritage site "Loire Valley between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes".

City of Safranbolu | Turkey

Postcard

Safranbolu is a town located about 200 kilometers north of Ankara. The name of the town derives from 'saffron' and the Greek word 'polis'(meaning city), since Safranbolu was a trading place and a center for growing saffron.

The City of Safranbolu is a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its well preserved Ottoman era houses and architecture.

The Town of Diamantina | Brazil

In the heart of arid and rocky mountains in the state of Minas Gerais, the Historic Center of Diamantina rises 150m up the side of a steep valley.

The city's history dates back to the early 1700’s when an expedition found diamonds on the mountain slopes and along the rivers in this region. Mining blossomed in Diamantina in the 18th and early 19th century. After that, richer and better quality deposits in South-Africa were found.

The Historic Centre of the Town of Diamantina is a UNESCO World Heritage site. 

Rila Monastery | Bulgaria

The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila, better known as the Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. The monastery was founded in the 10th century, today housing around 60 monks. 

Murter Island | Croatia

Murter is an island in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea. The island is only 6 meters away from land and is connected to the mainland by a mobile bascule-bridge. 

Most of the island is covered with age - old olive trees and fig-trees, which are the main traditional crops grown by the natives. The island is surrounded on most parts by the Kornati islands.

Lighthouse Grebeni stands on a rugged rock populated only by yellow-legged gulls. The island is located a four-kilometre boat ride from Dubrovnik's Old Harbour. The stamp is part of a set of four stamps about Croatian lighthouses (2015).

Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape | Czech Republic

“Between the 17th and 20th centuries, the ruling dukes of Liechtenstein transformed their domains in southern Moravia into a striking landscape. It married Baroque architecture (mainly the work of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach) and the classical and neo-Gothic style of the castles of Lednice and Valtice with countryside fashioned according to English romantic principles of landscape architecture. At 200 km2 , it is one of the largest artificial landscapes in Europe.”

Historic centre of Graz | Austria

The historic centre of Graz, Austria’s second largest city, is a UNESCO World Heritage site.  The city's "Old Town" is one of the best-preserved city centres in Central Europe.

 

On the hill in the background you see the “Grazer Uhrturm” (Clocktower of Graz).It was built in 1560. Its dial’s are over five meters in diameter!

Former island of Schokland | Netherlands

Postcard

Schokland is a former island in the Dutch Zuiderzee. The island was an attractive settlement area in the Middle Ages, but by the 19th century it was under continuous threat of flooding due to the rise in sea level. A major flood in 1825 brought massive destruction, and in 1859 the government decided to end permanent settlement on Schokland. 

 

Schokland and surroundings is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995.

Hanseatic City of Toruń | Poland

Postcard

Toruń is one of the oldest cities in Poland. The city is located in northern Poland, on the Vistula River. It is the birthplace of the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. The old town of Toruń is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

In 1280 the city joined the Hanseatic League, a commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and their market towns.

Tkon village, Pašman island | Croatia

Tkon is a typical fishing village and port, located on the island of Pašman, off the coast of the Adriatic Sea in Croatia.  Pašman is surrounded by the islands Ugljan, Iž, Dugi otok and Kornati. It is the 12th island in Croatian archipelago by land area.

The uninhabited islets surrounding Pašman island are frequented by bottlenose dolphins.

Sighisoara is a small, fortified medieval town located in the heart of Transylvania (Romania). This medieval town was also the birthplace of Vlad Dracula, who inspired Bram Stoker's fictional creation Count Dracula.

The Bottom, capital of Saba | Dutch Caribbean

With 500 inhabitants, The Bottom is the largest town of the island of Saba. A very small island, it measures only 13 square kilometers. Saba is one of the special municipalities of the Netherlands located in the Caribbean.

Hanseatic City of Buxtehude | Germany

Buxtehude is a town on the Este River in Northern Germany. The town has a rich history of more than 1000 years. It was the first German town to be developed in a structured way around a harbor. 

Located at the route of the Hanseatic waterways it provided for a convenient crossing of the Elbe and developed into a lively Hanseatic town.

The building in typical Bauhaus style is located in the White City in Tel Aviv, a Unesco World Heritage site.

  

Funchal, capital of Madeira

Funchal is the largest city and the capital of Portugal's Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Coimbra | Portugal

Coimbra is a city in Portugal. The historical university buildings have been classified as World Heritage by UNESCO in 2013. The buildings can be seen on this postcard (upper part with the tower).

The Forbidden City, Beijing, China

Tiananmen Square is a large city square in the center of Beijing, China. It is the third largest city square in the World and main gate to the Forbidden City, the imperial palace for twenty-four emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It was forbidden to enter without special permission of the emperor.

The Meridian Gate is the main gate to the Forbidden City. Everyone who entered the Forbidden City in the old days had to observe the strict rules concerning the total five doors of the Meridian Gate. The central doorway was for the exclusive use of the emperor. However, an empress was granted the privilege of using this opening once, and only once, on her wedding day.

Santa Lucia, Honduras

Honduras has a lot of colonial towns, most of them are really beautiful, peaceful and quiet. Santa Lucia is such a town located in the mountains near Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras.

The towns main church was founded in the 1500's.

City of Deir el Qamar | دير القمر , Lebanon

Deir el Qamar is a village in south-central Lebanon, five kilometres outside of Beiteddine, consisting of stone houses with red-tiled roofs. The city is known the Capital of Emirs. From its palaces, Lebanon was governed from the 16th century until the 18th century.

 

On the western side of the Square stands a Mosque, which was the first to be built in Mount Lebanon. The Emir Fakhreddine Ist Maan constructed it in 1493.
