Midway Atoll | United States Minor Outlying Islands

Postcard
Midway Atoll is located on the far northern end of the Hawaiian archipelago. It is one the oldest atoll formations in the world that provides nesting habitat for millions of seabirds.

The Laysan duck once lived across the entire archipelago. But by 1860, the ducks had disappeared from everywhere except Laysan Island. In an effort to ensure the long-term future of this duck, 42 birds were translocated to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge in 2002. These thrived in their new surroundings, and another group were later relocated to Kure Atoll.

The postcard was sent from Wake Island, like Midway Atoll, part of UNESCO World Heritage site Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument.
