Postcard
Poverty Point State Historic Site is a prehistoric earthwork constructed by the Poverty Point culture. The site contains earthen ridges and mounds, built by indigenous people between 1700 and 1100 BC (that is 3400 years ago!). The earthworks are named after a 19th century plantation on the property.
The card itself looks a bit peculiar dont you think? It is actually an aerial photograph of the site. Most of this site is hidden in the earth!
Monumental Earthworks of Poverty Point is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
