The Hanseatic League, also called Hanse was founded by north German towns and German merchant communities abroad to protect their mutual trading interests. The league dominated commercial activity in northern Europe from the 13th to the 15th century.

Ruins of Loropéni | Burkina Faso

Ruins of Loropéni is a UNESCO World Heritage site of Burkina Faso. The 11,000m2 property, with its imposing 1000 year old stone walls, is part of a larger group of 100 stone enclosures that bear testimony to the power of the trans-Saharan gold trade.

The place was once a fortified settlement occupied by the Lohron or Koulango people who administered gold mining in the region, which probably started in the 11th century and reached its pinnacle during the 14th-17th century.

Longmen Grottoes | China

The Longmen Grottoes, a Buddhist cave complex located 13 kilometers south of Luoyang in China's Henan province, The caves were carved into the steep limestone cliffs of Mount Longmen and Mount Xiang. The Longmen Caves were continuously built during 400 years until the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127).

In total, more than 2,300 grottoes and niches, 100,000 Buddhist statues, ranging in size from several centimeters to over 17 meters, and over 2,800 inscriptions were carved into the cliffs at the site, making it the largest such complex in China.

Saint Croix - Salt River Landing | US Virgin Islands

The  United States Virgin Islands (USVI) are a group of islands in the Caribbean. The USVI consist of the main islands of Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas, along with the much smaller Water Island and many other surrounding minor islands.

Salt River Bay is located on the north side of the island of St. Croix. It contains the Columbus Landing Site, a National Historic Landmark that is the only known site where members of a Columbus expedition set foot on what is now United States territory.

Bassari and Bedik people | Senegal

The Bassari people are living in Senegal, Ghana, Gambia, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. The total population is between 10,000 and 30,000. The Bedick, or Bedik, are a minority ethnic group of Africa. They live in villages in the most isolated area of eastern Senegal.

Ellis Island | USA

Ellis Island served as a portal for immigrants seeking entrance to the United States from 1892 to 1954. This tiny island located in New York Harbor sits adjacent to the Statue of Liberty and the New Jersey coast.

As the nation's busiest immigrant inspection station, it processed approximately 12 million immigrants to the United States. Nearly 40 per cent of Americans have an ancestor who arrived at Ellis Island!

Tōdai-ji Temple | Japan

Tōdai-ji, meaning Eastern Great Temple, is a Buddhist temple complex that was once one of the powerful Seven Great Temples, located in the city of Nara, Japan. Its Great Buddha Hall houses the world's largest bronze statue of the Buddha, known in Japanese as Daibutsu.

The temple is part of UNESCO World Heritage site Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara.

The Jantar Mantar monument in Jaipur, Rajasthan is a collection of nineteen architectural astronomical instruments. Built by the Rajput king Sawai Jai Singh II in the early 18th century.

The name is derived from jantar meaning instrument or machine and mantar, meaningamething like consult or calculate. Therefore, Jantar Mantar literally means 'calculating instrument'. The Jantar Mantar, Jaipur is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Ankara - the capital of Turkey

Ankara is the capital of Turkey. With a population of about 4,6 million it is Turkey's second largest city after Istanbul.

The Kocatepe Mosque is the largest mosque in Ankara. It was built between 1967 and 1987. Its size and prominent location have made it a landmark that can be seen from almost anywhere in central Ankara.
