Ellis Island served as a portal for immigrants seeking entrance to the United States from 1892 to 1954. This tiny island located in New York Harbor sits adjacent to the Statue of Liberty and the New Jersey coast.
As the nation's busiest immigrant inspection station, it processed approximately 12 million immigrants to the United States. Nearly 40 per cent of Americans have an ancestor who arrived at Ellis Island!
