Isla Mujeres | Mexico

Isla Mujeres (Island of Women) is a Mexican island in the Caribbean Sea, 13 kilometers off the coast from Cancún.  The island has a population of about 12,000. On the island's west coast you'll find Tortugranja, the island's turtle sanctuary and rehabilitation center.

Cozumel is Mexico's third-largest island and largest Caribbean island, with a population of about 100,000. The island is a popular tourist destination.

Mount Liamuiga | Saint Kitts and Nevis

Mount Liamuiga is a 1,100-meters high stratovolcano which forms the western part of the island of Saint Kitts. The peak is the highest point on the island. The last verified eruptions from the volcano were about 1,800 years ago.

The volcano is located on Saint Kitts island but the card was sent from Nevis. Together with neighbouring island of Saint Kitts constitute one country: the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Nevis is located about 350 km east-southeast of Puerto Rico and 80 km west of Antigua. The island has a population of about 11,000.

Whitsunday Island is the largest of the 74 Whitsunday Islands located off the coast of Central Queensland, Australia. The beach is known for its crystal white silica sands and turquoise coloured waters.

Ross Island | India

India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands are an isolated group of 572 tropical islands, of which only 38 are currently inhabited. The islands are known for stunning beaches, thriving marine life, rich coral reefs and largely undisturbed primary forests. But beyond the idyllic views lie a dark past.

One of the islands, Ross Island, is a morbidly fascinating ghost town, where the remnants of a 19th-Century British settlement lie in ruins. Abandoned in the 1940s, the island is being reclaimed by nature.

In 1857, reacting to an unanticipated Indian revolt, the British Empire chose these remote islands as the site of a penal colony for Indian mutineers.

The national flag of Cyprus came into use on 16 August 1960, under the Zurich and London Agreements, whereby a constitution was drafted and Cyprus was proclaimed an independent state.

After World War I, Britain annexed the island and in 1925 Cyprus became a Crown colony. From the 1930s, Greek Cypriots campaigned for union with Greece. Archbishop Makarios played an important role in this movement.  The UK proposed instead (in 1948, 1954 and 1955) various forms of internal self-government. But in the end, in 1960, the UK negotiated an independence agreement with Greece and Turkey.

Hoover Dam is located in Black Canyon on the Colorado River about 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, USA. Originally called Boulder Dam, this engineering marvel was renamed for Herbert Hoover, the 31st president of the United States. It was the highest dam in the world when it was completed in 1935.

The flag of Swaziland was adopted on October 6, 1968 after Swaziland gained independence from Britain. It is modeled after a flag given to the Swazi Pioneer Corps by King Sobhuza II in 1941.

The centered regiment shield features a supporting staff with hanging tassels of feathers. Two Swazi ceremonial spears are placed above the staff.

Fairy tale castle of Württemberg | Germany

Lichtenstein Castle, built in 1840-1842, has been described as the "fairy tale castle of Württemberg."

The original castle dates back to 1200, but it was destroyed twice until it finally fell into ruins. It was reconstructed to feel like a medieval knight’s castle though, so it feels older than it actually is.

Lady Isabella | Isle of Man

The Laxey Wheel, also known as Lady Isabella, is the largest working waterwheel in the world. The wheel is built into the hillside above the village of Laxey in the Isle of Man.

It  was built in 1854 to pump water from the Glen Mooar part of the Great Laxey Mines industrial complex. It was named "Lady Isabella" after the wife of Lieutenant Governor Charles Hope, who was the island's governor at that time.

There is a story about the origin of the flag of Austria. According to the legend, the Babenberg Duke Leopold V. fought in the Crusade for the Holy Land in 1191 at the Battle of Acre so valiantly, that he did not even notice that his white shirt is totally covered in blood.

After the battle he realized that he had lost his standard, so he decided to hang his stained shirt instead. When he took off his belt with scabbard, an untouched white stripe appeared on his shirt.

The city of Guanajuato | Mexico

Guanajuato is a city in central Mexico. Founded by the Spanish in the early 16th century, the city became the world's leading silver-extraction centre in the 18th century.

You see the little frogs? Guanajuato comes from Purépecha Quanaxhuato, which has been translated as both "place of frogs" and "places of many hills".

Urnes Stave Church | Norway

Built in the 12th century, Urnes Stave Church is the oldest stave church in Norway. The Stave church is a medieval wooden Christian church built in Norway from the 11th to the 13th century, the walls of which were constructed of upright planks or staves.

Urnes Stave Church is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
