The Curonian Spit | Lithuania

The Curonian Spit is a 98 km long, thin, curved sand-dunespit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea coast. Its southern portion is located in Russia and its northern within Lithuania. 

It is aUNESCO World Heritage Site shared by the two countries.

Torre de Belém | Portugal


Postcard
The Belém tower was built in the sixteenth century in the Tagus river to control the entrance to the city from the sea. Today the tower is Lisbon’s popular tourist attraction.
The Torre de Belém is a UNESCO World Heritage site together with the Monastery of the Hieronymites, also located in Lisbon.

A stamp to celebrate the completion in 1614 of the autobiographical memoirs of Fernão Mendes Pinto (1509-1583), a Portuguese explorer and writer. His voyages are recorded in Pilgrimage (Peregrinação in Portugese).

The Semmering Railway | Austria

The Semmeringbahn is a mountain railway crossing the Semmering, a mountain pass in Austria. Built over 41 km of high mountains between 1848 and 1854, it is one of the greatest achievements of civil engineering from this pioneering phase of railway building.

The Semmering Railway is UNESCO World Heritage site.

The postcard was actually send from Germany. Normally I only show cards sent from the country of origin. But I guess the exception proves the rule.

Iglesia de Santa María del Naranco | Spain



Postcard
The church of St Mary at Mount Naranco is located near the city of Oviedo in Northern Spain. King Ramiro I ordered its construction in 848 and used it as a royal palace; it was later converted into a church.
 
The church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is inscribed under the name Monuments of Oviedo and the Kingdom of the Asturias.

Sighisoara is a small, fortified medieval town located in the heart of Transylvania (Romania). This medieval town was also the birthplace of Vlad Dracula, who inspired Bram Stoker's fictional creation Count Dracula.

Batu Cave Temple Comlex | Malaysia

The Batu Cave Temple in Malaysia is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India. The 42 metres tall statue is dedicated to Lord Murugan, the Hindu god of war. To get to the Temple Cave, you have to climb the steep 272 steps to the top of the Batu Caves.

The Silk Road was a network of trade routes between China and the Mediterranean. China silk comprised a large proportion of the trade along this ancient road, hence the name.

The Arch of Caracalla is a Roman triumphal arch from the beginning of the 3rd century, located at Djémila in Algeria. The arch, together with the rest of the archaeological site of Djémila is UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982.

Volcanic eruption at Fimmvörðuháls | Island

Fimmvörðuháls is the area between the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull in southern Iceland. One of the most popular hiking trails in Iceland.

The Fimmvörðuháls eruption in 2010 was small and spectacular and attracted visitors from around the world It lasted for 23 days.

Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park | Philippines

This park features a spectacular limestone karst landscape with an underground river. With 8.2-kilometer probably the longest navigable underground river in the world.
 
Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

The stamp on the right is to honor the Higantes Festival held in Angono on 22nd and 23rd of every November. Main feature of this festival are the parades of towering giants made of paper-mache, some as tall as fifteen feet. These giants are locally known as higantes.

Taka Bone Rate National Park is a marine park in Indonesia. The park includes the Takabonerate atoll islands, located in the Flores Sea, south of Sulawesi island. 

With 2220 square kilometers, Taka Bone Rate is the world’s third-largest coral atoll.
