Unesco site Hangzhou, China


Postcard
The World Heritage Committee has inscribed the West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou, comprising the West Lake and the hills surrounding its three sides, on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

The inscribed landscape has inspired famous poets, scholars and artists since the 9th century. It comprises numerous temples, pagodas, pavilions, gardens and ornamental trees, as well as causeways and artificial islands.

Algeria 1955

Bab el-Oued is a neighbourhood in Algiers, the capital of Algeria, along the coast north of the city centre. Towards the end of the Algerian War of Independence, the neighbourhood became the stronghold of the Organisation de l'Armee Secrete.

50th Anniversary of National Day of Moudjahid  20 August 1955. The Battle of Philippeville was part of the Algerian War between France and Algerian rebels, primarily the National Liberation Front (FLN) The battle took place on August 20, 1955 and centered on the Algerian town of Philippeville.

The Touareg live in what is known as the central Sahara, which includes a big chunk of Algeria. The Sahara is huge – it’s nine million square kilometres. That’s as big as the United States.

Medieval games in Lida Castle, Belarus

Shangri La from China and look at those birds

Shangri-La County is a primarily Tibetan county in northwestern Yunnan province, Southwest China. Not to be confused with the fictional paradise Shangri La from the book " Lost Horizon" (1933, James Hilton).

Mount Maunganui is New Zealand's favourite summer holiday destination with its white sandy surf beach on the ocean side, and a safe sheltered inner harbour beach. Mount Maunganui is also the name of the extinct volcano which rises above the beautiful Mount Maunganui surf beach.

A German folktale on a postcard from Bremen

Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten  is a folktale recorded by the Brothers Grimm.
In the story a donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster, all past their prime years in life and usefulness on their respective farms, were soon to be discarded or mistreated by their masters. One by one they leave their homes and set out together. They decide to go to Bremen, known for its freedom, to live without owners and become musicians there.

Apollo's Temple and St Paul's Pillar from Cyprus

Postcard #1  Temple of Apollo
This small temple, with its simple Doric columns, was one of the most sacred shrines of ancient Cyprus. The penalty for touching its altar was to be hurled from the nearby cliffs into the sea.

Postcard #2  St. Paul’s Pillar
Paphos , sometimes referred to as Pafos, is a coastal city in the southwest of Cyprus. The town
of Paphos is included in the official UNESCO list of cultural and natural treasures of the world's heritage.

On the right: It’s one of a series of 5 domestic animal stamps.

On the left: The Refugee Fund Tax Stamp. Every letter, postcard and parcel has to have an additional refugee postage stamp on it (cost as at January 2011 is 2 cents) in order for it to enter the sending process. The proceeds of the refugee stamps go to the refugee fund, i.e. for the Greek Cypriots who became refugees from their homes in the north of Cyprus after the invasion in 1974. See pictures above of the first refugee stamp, and the current issue which was released in 2009.

Amman, capital of Jordan

Amman is the capital and largest city of Jordan. It’s ancient (Greek) name is Philadelphia.  The Greater Amman area has a population of 2,842,629. On the picture you see The King Abdullah I Mosque.
