The underground city of Kaymakli | Turkey

Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia is a UNESCO World Heritage site that covers the region between the cities of Nevşehir, Ürgüp and Avanos, the sites of Karain, Karlık, Yeşilöz, Soğanlı and the subterranean cities of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu.

These cave-cities were excavated as early as Hittite times to protect againt plundering enemies. There are 36 underground cities in Cappadocia and the widest one is Kaymakli underground city.

Edinburgh | Tristan da Cunha

Tristan da Cunha is the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world, 2,400 kilometres from the nearest inhabited land, Saint Helena, and 2,400 kilometres from the nearest continental land, South Africa.

Edinburgh of the Seven Seas is the main settlement on the island. Only 275 inhabitants!Locally it is always referred to as The Settlement.

Flags of the World | Japan

The sun has important religious and mythological significance in the country. Local beliefs suggest that Amaterasu, the sun goddess, is a direct ancestor of the Emperors of Japan.

Dinosaur Provincial Park | Canada

Dinosaur Provincial Park is public park located in the badlands of southeastern Alberta, Canada. The park contains some of the most important fossil discoveries ever made.

More than 150 full dinosaur skeletons have been unearthed and more than 50 species have been discovered. All dating back some 75 million years.

Dinosaur Provincial Park  is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Masada | Israel

Masada is an ancient fortification in the Southern District of Israel situated on top of an isolated rock plateau. It is located on the eastern edge of the Judaean Desert, overlooking the Dead Sea.

In 66 AD, Masada was a Roman garrison when the Sicarii, a group of Jewish extremists, overcame it and settled there. The Sicarii used Masada as a refuge, and also a base from which they raided the surrounding countryside.

Masada is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Hotel Ivoire | Ivory Coast

The 5-star luxury Hotel Ivoire was built by Moshe Mayer in 1963 and is beautifully renovated in 2011.

The hotel is located in Abidjan, the economic capital of Côte d'Ivoire. With a population of about 5 million, it is one of the most populous French-speaking cities in Africa.

Paharpur Ruins | Bangladesh

The ruins of this Buddhist monastic complex are located located to the north-west of Bangladesh, close to the village of Paharpur. The ruins date back to 770-810AD and represent an important pre-Islamic monument in Bangladesh.

Ruins of the Buddhist Vihara at Paharpur is UNESCO World Heritage site.

Old Town of Santiago de Compostella | Spain

This famous pilgrimage site in north-west Spain became a symbol in the Spanish Christians' struggle against Islam. Destroyed by the Muslims at the end of the 10th century, it was completely rebuilt in the following century.

With its Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque buildings, the Old Town of Santiago is one of the world's most beautiful urban areas. The oldest monuments are grouped around the tomb of St James and the cathedral, which contains the remarkable Pórtico de la Gloria. (source: whc.unesco.org/en/list/347)

Flags of the World | Australia

After the Commonwealth of Australia was formed, thousands of proposals were submitted by the general public in flag design competitions. The winning design, announced on September 3, 1901, is basically still in use today.

The flag has the Union Jack together with five white multipointed stars in the form of the Southern Cross constellation plus a seven-pointed “Commonwealth Star” (representing the six Australian states and the Northern Territory).
