The Archipelago of the Azores is composed of nine volcanic islands situated in the North Atlantic Ocean. The islands form the Autonomous Region of the Azores, one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal. The other one is Madeira.

São Jorge is a relatively long thin island in the center of the Azores with tall cliffs, and a population of about 10,000.
