Colonia
del Sacramento is a city in southwestern Uruguay, on the
east bank of the Río de la Plata, only 50km from Buenos Aires by
ferry. It is one of the oldest towns in Uruguay, founded by the Portuguese in
1680. The city was of strategic importance in resisting the Spanish.
Its
historic quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
