Sacred City of Kandy | Sri Lanka

Kandy is a mountain city in Sri Lanka. was home to the Sinhalese kings from 1592 to 1815. It is also the site of Sri Dalada Maligawa, also called the Temple of the Tooth, as a special container holds a tooth of the Buddha. Over the years, the relic came to be very important politically; the belief was that the holder of the sacred tooth was the one who would have power over the Buddhist population.

Sacred City of Kandy is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Gros Morne National Park | Canada

Church of Saint Nicholas in Budești | Romania

Wooden Churches of Maramureş is a UNESCO World Heritage site. According to Unesco the eight insrcibed churches are outstanding examples of a range of architectural solutions from different periods and areas.

Bas-relief of Bisotun | Iran



Postcard
Bisotun is located along the ancient trade route linking the Iranian high plateau with Mesopotamia. The principal monument of this archaeological site is the bas-relief and cuneiform inscription ordered by Darius I, The Great, when he rose to the throne of the Persian Empire in 521 BC.

The inscription consits of 1119 lines in three languages and measures 15m high by 25 m wide.

Slovak Karst National Park | Slovakia

Domica Cave is the most known and longest cave of the Slovak Karst National Park. As a special experience the Domica cave offers to its visitors an attractive boat trip on its underground river.

Domica is part of Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst, a UNESCO World Heritage site.  The Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst are outstanding for the large number of complex, diverse and relatively intact caves concentrated into a relatively small area. The 700 caves are located at the north-eastern border of Hungary and the south-eastern border of Slovakia.

Elephants in Kenya

Historic Hotels - Adelaide | Australia

Adelaide is known globally as the city of churches but the history books show the South Australian capital is just as much a city of grand old pubs.

From corner to corner, the city streets are dotted with some of the oldest and best-known pubs and hotels in Adelaide. The card shows some of these historic hotels: Newmarket Hotel (est.1847), The Stag (1849), The Botanic (1876) and The Austral.

Takayama Matsuri | Japan

The Takayama Festivals (Takayama Matsuri) are held every spring and fall in Takayama, Japan. These festivals are famous for the large ornate floats, or yatai, which roam around the city at night. The floats date back to the 17th century, and are decorated with intricate carvings of gilded wood and detailed metal-work.

Takayama is one of the 33 Float Festivals added to the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Aquileia Basilica | Italy

Aquileia is an ancient Roman city in Italy. Once it was one of the largest and wealthiest cities of the Early Roman Empire. Destroyed by Attila in the mid-5th century. Most of it still lies unexcavated beneath the fields.

Among the jewels of this city is the Patriarchal Basilica, built c. 1000, and brilliant with its magnificent 4th-Century mosaics.

Archaeological Area and the Patriarchal Basilica of Aquileia is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The flag originated during the uprising against the Turks in 1821, when a blue flag with a white cross was raised in order to oppose the Ottoman crescent. Miguasha National Park | Canada

Miguasha National Park is considered to be the world's greatest palaeontological record of fossils from the Devonian Period, known as the 'Age of Fishes'. Five of the six main fossil fish groups from this period (dating from 370 million years ago) can be found here.

The Colosseum is an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome. It is the largest amphitheatre ever built. The Colosseum is within the boundairies of UNESCO World Heritage site Historic Centre of Rome, the Properties of the Holy See in that City Enjoying Extraterritorial Rights and San Paolo Fuori le Mura.

Fenghuang Ancient City | China

Fenghuang is a small county town renowned for its natural beauty, rich history, colorful ethnic customs, and photogenic night scenery. 'Fenghuang' is Chinese for 'Phoenix', the mythical bird of good omen and longevity that is consumed by fire to be re-born again from the flames.

Fenghuang was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2008.

Rømø Island | Denmark

Rømø is the southernmost of Denmark's Wadden Sea Islands. The island has about 650 inhabitants.

Rømø is located about 3 km from the neighbouring German island of Sylt, to which it is connected by ferry. From 1864 until 1920, Rømø belonged to Germany.
