A Famosa | Malaysia

Postcard
A Famosa is a former Portuguese fortress located in Malacca, Malaysia. It is among the oldest surviving European architectural remains in Southeast Asia and the Far East. Actually only some small parts of the original fort remains today.

The fort was built in 1511 after a Portuguese fleet arrived that attacked and defeated the armies of the Malacca Sultanate. The fort changed hands in 1641 when the Dutch drove the Portuguese out of Malacca. The fortress changed hands again in the late 18th century when the Dutch handed it over to the British to prevent it from falling into the hands of Napoleon's expansionist France.

Melaka and George Town, Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
