Mines of Guanajuato | Mexico

Guanajuato is a city in central Mexico. Founded by the Spanish in the early 16th century, the city became the world's leading silver-extraction centre in the 18th century.

Historic Town of Guanajuato and Adjacent Mines is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Valongo Wharf Archaeological Site | Brazil

The Valongo Wharf is an old dock located in the port area of Rio de Janeiro. Built in 1811, it was the site of landing and trading of enslaved Africans until 1831. An estimated 900,000 Africans arrived in South America via Valongo. 

Valongo Wharf Archaeological Site is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

In 1912 the flag of El Salvador was changed to what it is today, a blue-white-blue horizontal triband with coat of arms at the centre. Similar to the flag of the Great Republic of Central America, a short-lived political union between El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, lasting from 1896 to 1898.

 

San Simon Island | Spain

San Simon is a small archipelago of four islands located in the Vigo bay to the south of Galicia. The two main islands are San Simon and San Anton. These islands have been inhabited since the fifth century by numerous monastic communities.

During the Spanish Civil War the islands became a prison island, much like Alcatraz, and its prison was reputed to hold as many as two thousand prisoners at any one time. 

Byblos Castle | Lebanon

Byblos Castle is a Crusader castle in Byblos, Lebanon. The castle was built by the Crusaders in the 12th century from indigenous limestone and the remains of Roman structures. 

Byblos is a UNESCO World Heritage site. 

The island of Elba | Italy

Elba is the biggest island of the Tuscan Archipelago and the third largest in Italy after Sardinia and Sicily. The island is famous around the world for harboring French Emperor Napoleon in 1814 during his exile. 

Giglio Island is one of the other six islands in the Tuscan Archipelago.

 

Flags of the World | Pitcairn Islands

Traditionally, Pitcairn Islanders consider that their islands "officially" became a British colony on 30 November 1838. By the mid-1850s, the Pitcairn community was outgrowing the island; its leaders appealed to the British government for assistance, and were offered Norfolk Island. 

On 3 May 1856, the entire population of 193 people set sail for Norfolk on board the Morayshire. Only eighteen months later, seventeen of the Pitcairn Islanders returned to their home island, and another 27 followed five years later. The flag of the Pitcairn Islands was adopted on 2 April 1984.

As you cas see, the card has Norfolk Island stamps. Pitcairn did not allow to send FOTW cards from the island. But, as history of both islands are so much related, its the next best thing.

 

Church of the Archangel Michael, Binarowa | Poland

St. Michael Archangel's Church in Binarowa is a Gothic, wooden church located in the village of Binarowa, dating from the fifteenth-century.

The wooden churches of southern Little Poland represent outstanding examples of the different aspects of medieval church-building traditions in Roman Catholic culture. Built using the horizontal log technique, common in eastern and northern Europe since the Middle Ages, these churches were sponsored by noble families and became status symbols.

Wooden Churches of Southern Małopolska is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Six churches are listed:

The Church of Saint-Nicolas of Ruská Bystrá is a Greek-catholic church located in the village of Ruská Bystrá in Slovakia. The church was build in 1730. 

Wooden Churches of the Slovak part of the Carpathian Mountain Area is a UNESCO World Heritage site. In total 8 wooden churches are listed. One of these is the Church of the Holy Trinity in Kežmarok.

The House of Savoy is one of the oldest royal families in the world, founded in the year 1003. The name derives from the historical region of Savoy in the Alpine region between what is now France and Italy.

When Emmanuel-Philibert, Duke of Savoy, moved his capital to Turin in 1562, he began a vast series of building projects (continued by his successors) to demonstrate the power of the ruling house. Residences of the Royal House of Savoy is a UNESCO World Heritage site. 14 residences are listed.

The site, comprising the West Lake and the hills surrounding its three sides, has inspired famous poets, scholars and artists since the 9th century. It comprises numerous temples, pagodas, pavilions, gardens and ornamental trees, as well as causeways and artificial islands.

Mount Fuji | Japan

Mt Fuji is Japan's highest mountain at 3,776m. It is also one of the traditional "Three Holy Mountains" - along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku, both located in central Japan. The dormant volcano, which last erupted just over 300 years ago, is visible from Tokyo on a clear day.

Fujisan, sacred place and source of artistic inspiration is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The flag of Kenya depicts a Maasai shield and two crossed spears. The flag is based on that of Kenya African National Union and was officially adopted on 12 December 1963 after Kenya's independence.

Røros Mining Town | Norway

Røros Mining Town and the Circumference is a Unesco World Heritage site. This site is linked to the copper mines, established in the 17th century and exploited for 333 years until 1977.

Røros is a unique mining town built exclusively of wood. The wooden houses and the centre of the town are included on the list. The mining town has retained much of its original structure in the layout of the streets from the 1600s, and the wooden houses built in the1700 and 1800s.

The White Tower of Thessaloniki | Greece

The White Tower, the most prominent monument of Thessaloniki, which dominates the port area, was built in late 15th century, as the south-east tower of the city’s fortification. It is an imposing six-storey, cylinder shaped structure, with 23 meters in diameter and 34 in height.

Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Arch of Neutrality | Turkmenistan

Ashgabat is the capital and the largest city of Turkmenistan. Did you know that Turkmenistan is number 7 on the list of the least visited countries in the world? Receiving only 7,000 visitors per year. Many travelers choose to skip Turkmenistan due to the strict visa rules.

The Monument of Neutrality is a monument located in Ashgabat. This 75 metres tall tripod was built in 1998 on the orders of Turkmenistan's President Saparmurat Niyazov (Turkmenbashi) to commemorate the country's official position of neutrality.

Murano Island and Lighthouse | Italy

Murano is an island in the Venetian Lagoon, located north-east of Venice. It is actually seven islands connected by bridges, forming canals. The island has its own lighthouse.

Murano is famous for its long history of glass making. In 1291, all the glassmakers in Venice were required to move to Murano. In the following century, exports began, and the island became famous, initially for glass beads and mirrors.

Mount Robson | Canada

Mount Robson is the most prominent mountain in North America's Rocky Mountain range; it is also the highest point in the Canadian Rockies. The mountain is located entirely within Mount Robson Provincial Park of British Columbia.

Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This site comprises Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho national parks and Mount Robson, Mount Assiniboine and Hamber provincial parks.

Flags of the World | Oman

The national flag of Oman was adopted in 1970. It features a white-red-green horizontal tricolour with a vertical red band and white national emblem featuring crossed swords with a khanjar and belt on the left side.

The green colour represents the Jabal al Akdar mountains, the white is the Imam and the red is the traditional colour of Gulf state flags.
