Peñón de Alhucemas is a tiny rock island, measuring 220 m by 84 m and has a height of 27 m. The rock is entirely occupied by a fort, several houses, and a church.
The island is one of the Spanish plazas de soberanía (places of sovereignty). These are Spanish sovereign territories, scattered along the Mediterranean coast bordering Morocco. Two other notorious plazas de soberanía are Ceuta and Melilla.
