The Hanseatic League was a commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and their market towns. The Hansa existed for some centuries. Originally it was an organisation of merchants, but as their guilds were connected to the towns where they lived, it soon became an organisation for towns.
Osnabrück belonged to the Hansa from 1412 and enjoyed high standing. The heart of the city is the Market Square. In front of the gabled merchant houses you enjoy the view on the City Hall and the St Mary's Church.
