Hanseatic town of Viljandi | Estonia
Postcard
Viljandi is a town in southern Estonia with a population of around 17,500. The town became a member of the Hanseatic League at the beginning of the 14th century, and is one of five Estonian towns and cities in the league.
The Hanseatic League was a late-medieval network of economically largely independent long-distance trade merchants which was based on trust, reputation and reciprocal relations. With 180 member cities, the Hanseatic League was a powerful trading confederation for 300 years.
