Fountains Abbey | United Kindom

Postcard
Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England. Founded in 1132, the abbey operated for 407 years becoming one of the wealthiest monasteries in England until its dissolution in 1539 under the order of Henry VIII.

The Dissolution of the Monasteries was the set of administrative and legal processes between 1536 and 1541 by which Henry VIII disbanded monasteries, priories, convents and friaries in England, Wales and Ireland. He appropriated their income, disposed of their assets, and provided for their former personnel and functions.

Studley Royal Park including the Ruins of Fountains Abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
