Matera is a city in Southern Italy with a rich history. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, having been inhabited since the 10th millennium BC.
The Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Sassi refers to the two districts well-known for their ancient cave dwellings. The park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera refers to a rugged regional park featuring churches carved out of caves & cliffs.
