Valaam is an archipelago in the
northern portion of Lake Ladoga, located within the Republic of
Karelia, Russian Federation. The archipelago comprises fifty islands
and is named after the biggest, Valaam.
Some of the Valaam islands are joined
by bridges.
Valaam Island is home to 150 Orthodox monks of the
Valaam monastery who try to be self-sufficient.
