British Indian Ocean Territory

The British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) is an archipelago of 58 islands covering some 640,000 sq km of ocean. This British Overseas Territory is administered from London and is located approximately halfway between Tanzania and Indonesia.

The largest and most southerly island is Diego Garcia, the site of a joint military facility of the United Kingdom and the United States. The only inhabitants of the territory are US and British military personnel and associated contractors. Access to the islands is restricted and a permit is required in advance of travel.
