Le Mont-Saint-Michel is an island located about one kilometer off the Normandy coast in France. Since the 8th century the island has been the seat of the monastery from which it draws its name. This is one of France's most recognisable landmarks, visited by more than 3 million people each year.
The island is actually a tidal island, a piece of land that is connected to the mainland by a natural or man-made causeway that is exposed at low tide and submerged at high tide.
Mont-Saint-Michel and its Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
