The national flag of the Gambia was adopted in 1965 after gaining independence.
From 1889 to 1965 The Gambia was a British protectorate. The Gambia achieved independence on 18 February 1965 as a constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth, with Elizabeth II as Queen of the Gambia, represented by the Governor-General.
