Merseburg is a town in the south of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt located near the river Saale. In 1426 Merseburg joined the League of Hanseatic Cities.
The Hanseatic League dominated commercial activity in the Baltic Sea in the Middle Ages. The League was founded by north German towns and German merchant communities abroad to protect their mutual trading interests.
