Crespi d'Adda in Capriate San Gervasio is an outstanding example of the 19th- and early 20th-century 'company towns' built in Europe and North America by enlightened industrialists to meet the workers' needs.

In 1869 Cristoforo Benigno Crespi, a textile manufacturer built a cotton mill on the banks of the river Adda. He founded the village of Crespi to house the workers in his textile factory.
