The flag of Lithuania was first used from 1918 to 1940, Lithuania's first period of independence in the 20th century.

During and after World War II, until 1989, the flag had a different design. The last alteration to the current flag occurred in 2004, when the size of the flag changed from 1:2 to 3:5.
