Brandenburg an der Havel is a German town located on the banks of the River Havel. In 1314 the town joined the Hanseatic League.
The Hanseatic League was a commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and their market towns. The Hansa existed for some centuries. Originally it was an organisation of merchants, but as their guilds were connected to the towns where they lived, it soon became an organisation for towns.
