The Srebarna Nature Reserve is a freshwater lake located in northeastern Bulgaria, near the village of the same name. The lake is the breeding ground of almost 100 species of birds, many of which are rare or endangered.

Thracian Tomb of Sveshtari | Bulgaria

Discovered in 1982 in a mound, this 3rd century BC Getic tomb reflects the fundamental structural principles of Thracian cult buildings. The tomb's architectural decor is considered to be unique, with polychrome half-human, half-plant caryatids and painted murals.

Flags of the World | Bulgaria

The flag of Bulgaria was first adopted after the 1877–1878 Russo-Turkish War, when Bulgaria gained independence. The national flag at times was charged with the state emblem, especially during the communist era. The current flag was re-established in 1991.

Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak | Bulgaria

The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak is a vaulted-brickwork tomb near the town of Kazanlak in central Bulgaria. The tomb is part of a large Thracian necropolis. It comprises a narrow corridor and a round burial chamber, both decorated with murals representing a Thracian couple at a ritual funeral feast. The monument dates back to the 4th century BCE.

The Madara Horseman | Bulgaria

The Madara Rider, representing the figure of a knight triumphing over a lion, is carved into a 100-m-high cliff near the village of Madara in north-east Bulgaria.

Madara was the principal sacred place of the First Bulgarian Empire before Bulgaria’s conversion to Christianity in the 9th century. The inscriptions beside the sculpture tell of events that occurred between AD 705 and 801.

Rila Monastery | Bulgaria

The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila, better known as the Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. The monastery was founded in the 10th century, today housing around 60 monks. 

Sofia | София, capital of Bulgaria

Sofia is the capital and, with a population of around 1.4 million people, the largest city of Bulgaria.

This fine bronze statue portrays the Russian Tsar Alexander II on horseback and is a gesture of gratitude to the Russian Tsar and his troops who finally liberated Bulgaria in 1878 from Ottoman rule.

About 6.7 million Bulgarians, 85 percent of the population, are officially registered as belonging to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.
