In the 14th century the construction started of massive stone town walls to protect its two urban nuclei: the original medieval town and the harbour area.The Historic Centre of Oporto is located within the line of these Fernandine walls (named after Dom Fernando, in whose reign they were completed in 1376), together with some smaller areas that retain their medieval characteristics.

The Garrison Town of Elvas was fortified extensively from the 17th to the 19th centuries to become the largest bulwarked dry ditch system in the world, with outlying forts built on surrounding hills to accommodate the changing needs of defensive warfare.

In the 18th century the Fort of Graça (Nossa Senhora da Graça Fort) was constructed in response to the development of longer-range artillery, as well as four fortlets to the west.

The Fort of Graça is part of UNESCO World Heritage site Garrison Border Town of Elvas and its Fortifications.

Amoreira Aqueduct | Portugal

Garrison Border Town of Elvas and its Fortifications is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The site also contains the Amoreira aqueduct, built to enable the stronghold to withstand lengthy sieges.

Giraldo Square in Évora | Portugal

Praça do Giraldo is the main square of Évora and it is hard to believe that this calm and pleasant setting was the scene for some of the region’s most violent historical events. The square was the focal point for the murderous 16th century Spanish Inquisitions and more significantly the location of the execution of the Duke of Braganza in 1484.

This university is one of Europe’s oldest universities. Established in 1290 in Lisbon, it went through a number of relocations until it was moved permanently to its current city in 1537.

The Castle of the Moors, Sintra, Portugal

The Castle of the Moors is a hilltop medieval castle located in the municipality of Sintra. The castle was constructed during the 8th to 9th century, during the period of Arab occupation of the Iberian peninsula, as the central place in an territory that was imminently agricultural, and which was necessary to protect its population.

The Moorish Castle stands in a 1475 feet (450 meters) perimeter and its walls consist of a double waist, internal and external. At the top there are battlements, strengthened by five towers.

A tram is a passenger rail vehicle which runs on tracks along public urban streets and also sometimes on separate rights of way.

The first tramway in Lisbon entered service on 17 November 1873, as a horsecar line. On 30 August 1901, Lisbon's first electric tramway commenced operations. Within a year, all of the city's tramways had been converted to electric traction.
