Mtskheta was the ancient capital of Kartli, the East Georgian Kingdom from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD, and was also the location where Christianity was proclaimed as the official religion of Georgia in 337.

Historical Monuments of Mtskheta is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The property consists of the Jvari Monastery, the Svetitstkhoveli Cathedral and the Samtavro Monastery.

Flags of the World | Georgia

The flag of Georgia is known as the Five Cross Flag. Originally a banner of the medieval Kingdom of Georgia, it was brought back to popular use in the late 20th and early 21st centuries during periods of the Georgian national revival.

Prior to obtaining its official status in 2004, the flag was popularized by the United National Movement and served as one of the most recognizable symbols of the Rose Revolution.

Gelati Monastery | Georgia

Gelati is a monastic complex in western Georgia, built between the 12th and 17th centuries. 

Together with Bagrati Cathedral, Gelati Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Both cathedral and monastery represent the flowering of medieval architecture in Georgia.

update juli 2017: UNESCO removed Bagrati Cathedral from its World Heritage sites in 2017, considering its major reconstruction detrimental to its integrity and authenticity.

Preserved by its long isolation, the Upper Svaneti region of the Caucasus is an exceptional example of mountain scenery with medieval-type villages and tower-houses. The sun rarely peaks out from behind a thin layer of clouds, and pine-covered hills rise over the traditional stone tower buildings.

Lenjeri is a village with many ‘Svan towers’. These tower homes were at the same time familial living quarters, fortified fortresses of defense, and personal treasuries. Most of the towers date back to the period between 9th and 12th century.

Upper Svaneti is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996.

Svaneti is the high Caucasus mountain region in the northwestern corner of Georgia.

Preserved by its long isolation, the Upper Svaneti region is an exceptional example of mountain scenery with medieval-type villages and tower-houses. But this card only shows trees.

Georgia is a country in the Caucasus, bounded to the west by the Black Sea, to the north by Russia, to the south by Turkey and Armenia, and to the southeast by Azerbaijan. 

Tbilisi is the capital and with 1,5 million inhabitants, the largest city of Georgia.

Mount Kazbek and Gergeti Trinity Church | Georgia

Mount Kazbek is one of the highest peaks of the Caucasus, a dormant stratovolcano with a height of 5,047 meters.

If you look very closely you can see Gergeti Trinity Church on this postcard. The church is situated on the right bank of the river Chkheri, at an elevation of 2170 meters, under Mount Kazbek.

The House of Justice in Batumi, Georgia

Batumi is a seaside city on the Black Sea coast in southwest Georgia, located about 200km from the Turkish city of Trabzon.

The tall shaped building is the House of Justice. The building foundation was laid by president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili. 

Today, 27 October 2013, presidential elections are held in Georgia.

Mtskheta, located approximately 20 kilometers north of Tbilisi is one of the oldest cities of the country of Georgia. Due to its historical significance and numerous ancient monuments, the "Historical Monuments of Mtskheta" became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

Jvari Monastery (Monastery of the Cross) in Mtskheta is amongst the most significant monuments of Georgian Christian architecture.

Georgia is a sovereign state in the Caucasus region of Eurasia. It is bounded to the west by the Black Sea, to the north by Russia, to the south by Turkey and Armenia, and to the southeast by Azerbaijan.

The construction of Bagrati Cathedral, named after Bagrat III, the first king of united Georgia, started at the end of the 10th century and was completed in the early years of the 11th century. Although partly destroyed by the Turks in 1691, its ruins still lie in the centre of Kutaisi.
