Named for the tobacco cultivated by the original Carib population, Tobago existed separately from Trinidad for centuries. While the explorer Christopher Columbus sighted the island in 1498, he did not land and no attempts were made to colonize Tobago.

In 1889, during a period of economic decline, Britain annexed the smaller Tobago to Trinidad as an administrative ward. The islands achieved independence from England in 1962 and became the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in 1976.

After discovery by Christopher Columbus in 1498 the the island remained under Spanish rule until the end of the 18th century. The British captured it in 1797 and in 1889, they joined the smaller Tobago to Trinidad as an administrative ward. Early 1900’s many immigrants from greater Syria (comprising present day Iraq, Syria, Palestine and Lebanon) escaped religious persecution and economic hardship in their native countries. They started out as guest workers but today it is a thriving community.

Tobago is located in the far South of the Caribbean Sea. The smaller of the two main islands that make up the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

No Man’s Land is a stretch of sandy beach lapped by the most kaleidoscopic waters you will ever see. It is located just off the paradise shores of the Island of Tobago.

The area is accessible only by boat, making it  popular destination for Island boat tours and snorkeling. There are no permanent settlements and it is void of commercialization. It truly is a no man’s land.

Port of Spain is the capital of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. With 51,000 inhabitants it’s the largest city. Thanks in large part to its fine natural harbour, Port of Spain was made Trinidad's capital in 1757. 

Cruise ships dock is right next to Port of Spain's downtown, which has an urban feel, with skyscrapers, a financial center, arcade malls and debilitating rush-hour traffic.

Maracas beach Trinidad and Tobago

Maracas Beach is a beach on the island of Trinidad. It is located on the north side of the island, an hour's mountainous drive from the capital city of Port of Spain.

Unlike many of the northern beaches of Trinidad, Maracas Beach is protected by a deep bay. It is one of the most well known beaches in the island of Trinidad as its considered by some to be the most beautiful beach of its size located closest to the capital city.

The country covers consists of two main islands, Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad is the larger and more populous of the main islands. The capital city is Port of Spain.

The north coast of Trinidad is home to Maracas Bay, one of the more popular beaches on the island because of its rolling waves and shaded white sands.
