The Knights Castle - Rhodes | Greece

Rhodes is the largest of the twelve Dodecanese islands located in the Aegean sea.

The imposing Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes is located prominently on the highest point in medieval Rhodes. Today the palace serves as the home of the Byzantine Museum.

Medieval City of Rhodes is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Holy Island Northumberland | United Kingdom

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, also known simply as Holy Island, is a tidal island off the northeast coast of England. It is located in the part of England called Northumbria, once a medieval Anglian kingdom.

The island is home to a population of less than 200 and is connected to the mainland by a causeway that is cut off twice a day by the tides. Lindisfarne Castle is a 16th-century castle located on Holy Island, sited atop the volcanic mound known as Beblowe Craig.

Esterháza is a palace in Fertőd, Hungary, built by Prince Nikolaus Esterházy. Sometimes the palace is referred to as the "Hungarian Versailles".

Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage site for both Hungary and Austria.

The Fertö/Neusiedler Lake area has been the meeting place of different cultures for eight millennia. The remarkable rural architecture of the villages surrounding the lake and several 18th- and 19th-century palaces adds to the area’s considerable cultural interest.

Gewerkenegg Castle | Slovenia

The old town of Idrija, Slovenia is dominated by the Gewerkenegg Castle (mine castle in German). The Gewerkenegg Castle was built in the first half of the 16th century as the administrative building of the Idrija Mercury Mine – the second largest mercury mine in the world.

Since 1954 it has been the seat of the Municipal Museum Idrija. The entire complex is now a museum exhibition area and the inner courtyard a venue for many summer cultural events in Idrija.

Heritage of Mercury. Almadén and Idrija is a UNESCO World Heritage site.  Idrija – Old Town is one of the component parts of this site. Here you see another postcard about this site.

Elizabeth Castle | Jersey

Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, between England and France. A self-governing dependency of the United Kingdom.

Built on a rocky islet in St Aubin’s Bay, Elizabeth Castle has defended Jersey for more than 300 years. The castle was built in the 16th century. It is built on a tidal island, accessible at low tide by foot.

King's Island | Ireland

King John's Castle is a 13th-century castle located on King's Island in Limerick, Ireland. Although the site dates back to 922 when the Vikings lived on the Island, the castle itself was built on the orders of King John in 1200.

Fairy tale castle of Württemberg | Germany

Lichtenstein Castle, built in 1840-1842, has been described as the "fairy tale castle of Württemberg."

The original castle dates back to 1200, but it was destroyed twice until it finally fell into ruins. It was reconstructed to feel like a medieval knight’s castle though, so it feels older than it actually is.

Castelgrande | Switzerland

The Castles of Bellinzona are a group of fortifications located around the town of Bellinzona, the capital of the Swiss canton of Ticino. Castelgrande is located on a rocky peak overlooking the valley, with a series of walls that protect the old city.

Three Castles, Defensive Wall and Ramparts of the Market-Town of Bellinzona is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The other two castles are Montebello and Sasso Corbaro.

Blenheim Palace is a monumental English country house situated in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom. It is the principal residence of the Dukes of Marlborough. The palace, one of England's largest houses, was built between 1705 and circa 1722.

Neuschwanstein Castle | Germany

Neuschwanstein Castle is a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace, built on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau in southwest Bavaria, Germany.

The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria. Today the castle attracts 1.3 million visitors annually.

Duke Maurice of Saxony had a hunting lodge built in the Renaissance style in 1542 on a granite dome in Friedewald Forest that was rich in wildlife. Soon the castle, which later was named after him, was the center of Saxon hunting.

In 1723, major works began to convert it from a Renaissance building into a Baroque hunting and pleasure palace. The best Saxon craftsmen and artists collaborated in the providing the interior in the seven halls and more than 200 rooms.

Historic Centre of Warsaw | Poland

During the Warsaw Uprising in August 1944, more than 85% of Warsaw's historic centre was destroyed by Nazi troops. After the war, a five-year reconstruction campaign by its citizens resulted in today's meticulous restoration of the Old Town, with its churches, palaces and market-place. It is an outstanding example of a near-total reconstruction of a span of history covering the 13th to the 20th century.

The rebuilding of the Old Town continued until the mid-1960s. The entire process was completed with the reconstruction of the Royal Castle (opened to visitors in 1984).

Historic Centre of Warsaw is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Drottningholm Palace | Sweden

The Drottningholm Palace, dating back to the 16th century,  is the private residence of the Swedish royal family. It is located near Stockholm, on the island Lovön.

Royal Domain of Drottningholm is a Unesco world Heritage site. With its castle, perfectly preserved theatre (built in 1766), Chinese pavilion and gardens, it is the finest example of an 18th-century north European royal residence inspired by the Palace of Versailles.

Durham Castle and Cathedral | United Kingdom

Durham Cathedral captures a thousand years of British political, social and religious history. The Cathedral has been in continuous use since its original construction 900 years ago.

Behind the cathedral stands the castle, an ancient Norman fortress which was the stronghold and residence of the Prince-Bishops of Durham, who were given virtual autonomy in return for protecting the northern boundaries of England, and thus held both religious and secular power.

Durham Castle and Cathedral is a Unesco World Heritage site.

Vaduz Castle is the palace and official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein. The castle gave its name to the town of Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, which it overlooks from an adjacent hilltop. It is thought that the castle was constructed as a fortress as early as the 12th century.

Schloss Eggenberg | Austria

The Eggenberg Palace in Graz is the most significant Baroque palace complex in Austria's Styria region. The origins of this castle date back to 1460.

City of Graz – Historic Centre and Schloss Eggenberg is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Originally only the historic centre was included. Schloss Eggenber is an extension, added in 2010.

Stamps
The stamp on the left shows part of the “Grazer Uhrturm” (Clocktower of Graz). It was built in 1560. Its dial’s are over five meters in diameter!

Marksburg Castle | Germany

The Marksburg is a castle near the town of Braubach in Germany. It is one of the principal sites of the UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed under the name Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

According to unesco.org, the 65km-stretch of the Middle Rhine Valley, with its castles, historic towns and vineyards, graphically illustrates the long history of human involvement with a dramatic and varied natural landscape.

Sanssouci Palace | Germany

Sanssouci was the summer palace of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. The palace was bult in 1745 and is located in Potsdam, Germany.

Sanssouci is part of UNESCO World Heritage site Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin.
