Lake Malawi, located between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, is the third largest lake Africa. David Livingstone reached the lake in 1859 and named it Lake Nyasa. He also referred to it by a pair of nicknames: Lake of Stars and Lake of Storms.

Motor Vessel Ilala | Malawi

Built in 1949, the mv Ilala is a 400 tonne passenger vessel which has traditionally sailed the full length of lake Malawi. The ship is based in Monkey Bay on the southern end of the lake.

She carries both passengers and freight, and calls at major towns on both the Malawian and Mozambican coast, as well as at the two inhabited islands of the lake.

The flag of Malawi was adopted on 6 July 1964 after gaining independence from the United Kingdom. The rising sun represents the dawn of hope and freedom for the continent of Africa. The 31 rays of the sun represent the fact that Malawi was the 31st African nation at the time of its independence.

Lake Malawi National Park | Malawi

Lake Malawi National Park is a national park at the southern end of Lake Malawi in Malawi. Lake Malawi is one of the deepest lakes in the world. The national park is home to many hundreds of fish species, nearly all endemic. Its importance for the study of evolution is comparable to that of the finches of the Galapagos Islands.

Cape Maclear or Chembe is a town located in Lake Malawi National Park, close to the islands of Domwe and Thumbwe.

Lake Malawi National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Liwonde National Park | Malawi

Liwonde National Park is in the southern part of Malawi near the Mozambican border. It is situated on the left bank of the Shire river between Lake Malombe and Liwonde.

Wildlife in Liwonde National Park is abundant. Especially elephant and hippo numbers are high for this small national park: respectively 900 and 2000, which makes it one of the densest populations in Africa.

Baobab trees in Malawi

The baobab tree is an integral part of the African landscape. It can grow up to 30 meters tall and can live for several thousand(!) years. 

The tree looks like it has been picked out of the ground and stuffed back in upside-down.

The Flame Tree is a common name used in various parts of the world to refer to several different species of tree. This is a Flame Tree in Malawi.

 

A beautiful ornamental tree with flamboyant  orange flowers. This type of tree is very invasive, meaning it takes over whatever it can and crowds out native species.

A group of Yao initiates in Malawi

Malawi is a landlocked country in Southeast Africa with about 15 million inhabitants. The country is bordered by Zambia, Mozambique and Tanzania. The Yao are one of the three major ethnic groups in Malawi. The Yao is are primarily subsistence farmers, growing crops in the savannahs surrounding the lake.

Malawi  is a landlocked country in southeast Africa. It is bordered by Zambia, Tanzania and (for the most part) Mozambique. Once under British rule and known as Nyasaland, the country gained full independence in 1964 and renamed itself Malawi.

St Louis Montfort catholic church is located in Balaka, a district in the Southern Region of Malawi. It is named after Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort (1673 – 1716), a French Roman Catholic priest and Confessor. In 1705 he founded the community of the Missionaries of the Company of Mary, a missionary religious congregation within the Catholic Church. The congregation is made up of priests and brothers who serve both in the native lands and in other countries.
