Redwood National and State Parks is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The park comprises a region of coastal mountains bordering the Pacific Ocean north of San Francisco. It is covered with a magnificent forest of coastal redwood trees, the tallest and most impressive trees in the world. These trees can live to be 2000 years old and grow to over 300 feet tall!

Shirakami-Sanchi | Japan

Shirakami Sanchi refers to the massive 130,000ha mountainous land extended over Aomori and Akita prefecture in the Tōhoku region of northern Honshū, Japan. This mountainous area includes the last virgin forest of Siebold's beech which once covered most of northern Japan.

Shirakami-Sanchi is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Tree of Life | Bahrain

The Tree of Life in Bahrain is a Prosopis cineraria tree (Khejri tree) that is over 400 years old. The tree stands on a hill in a barren area of the Arabian Desert, 2 kilometers from Jebel Dukhan, the highest point in Bahrain, and 40 kilometers from Manama, the nearest city.

Quiver trees | Namibia

The quiver tree (or kokerboom in Afrikaans) is a tall, branching species of aloe, indigenous to parts of Southern Namibia. Bushmen traditionally used its branches to make quivers. A quiver is a container for holding arrows, bolts, or darts.

The Dune Lark is Namibia’s only true endemic bird; their range is entirely within the borders of the country. The Dune Lark‘s preferred habitat consists of sparsely vegetated sand dunes, where it does not drink water but instead feeds solely on seeds or insects.

Baobab trees in Malawi

The baobab tree is an integral part of the African landscape. It can grow up to 30 meters tall and can live for several thousand(!) years. 

The tree looks like it has been picked out of the ground and stuffed back in upside-down. 

Trees in the Svaneti region | Georgia

Postcard

Svaneti is the high Caucasus mountain region in the northwestern corner of Georgia.

Preserved by its long isolation, the Upper Svaneti region is an exceptional example of mountain scenery with medieval-type villages and tower-houses. But this card only shows trees.

Cedar at Sunset | Lebanon

The cedar of Lebanon is a tall evergreen tree which has been prized for its high quality timber, oils and resins for thousands of years. The tree is the national emblem of Lebanon.

Baobab at Sunset, Tarangire National Park | Tanzania

Postcard

Tarangire National Park is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania. The park is famous for its elephant migration.

 

The baobab is found in the savannas of African and India, mostly around the equator. It can grow up to 25 meters tall and can live for several thousand(!) years.

The baobab is leafless for nine months of the year. The tree looks like it has been picked out of the ground and stuffed back in upside-down.

A tree from Brasilia, capital of Brazil

Some time ago I received this card also picturing Brasilia, capital of Brazil. I like the contrast between the tree and the modern building in the backround.

The tree is known as the Pink Trumpet Tree, Pink Tecoma or Rosy trumpet tree. The tree is native to the American tropics and subtropics from Mexico and the Carribean to Argentina.

A frankincense tree from the Sultanate of Oman

Postcard

The incense tree has been the reason for the Omani merchants' fortune for over 2,000 years. The trees, which can reach up to 13 ft, grow naturally in the far ends of the wadis of Dhofar, in the south of the country. The collecting of the sap, also called olibanum, takes place in the spring when the sap hardens into small ‘tears' of variable color between yellow and white.

The incense was very valuable in Ancient History and during the Middle Ages because the places of production were kept secret and the journey to the West by caravan, across Yemen and Saudi Arabia, or by boat along the Red sea, would take several months in all.
