Flags of the World | Nepal

The Nepal flag was officially adopted on December 16, 1962. Nepal is the only country that does not have a rectangular national flag.

The blue border symbolizes peace and harmony. The crimson red is Nepal's national color, and it indicates the brave spirits of the Nepalese people. The two triangles symbolize the Himalaya Mountains.

Durbar Square is the generic name used to describe plazas and areas opposite the old royal palaces in Nepal.

In the old days Nepal consisted of small kingdoms, and Durbar Squares are most prominent remnants of those old kingdoms in Nepal. In particular, the Durbar Squares in Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. All three are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Nepal are most likely to be the mystical Himalayan mountains that stretch across its northern border, or the hectic capital Kathmandu where there is never a dull moment. You may be surprised to know that the dense jungle south of Kathmandu attracts thousands of visitors to Nepal every year.

Chitwan National Park is the first national park in Nepal. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1984.

Swayambhunath Stupa | The Monkey Temple, Kathmandu

A stupa, literally meaning "heap", is a mound-like or semi-hemispherical structure containing Buddhist relics, typically the ashes of Buddhist monks, used by Buddhists as a place of meditation.

Swayambhunath stupa is located atop of a hill in the Kathmandu Valley, near Kathmandu city, capital of Nepal. It is also called the `Monkey Temple' because of the many hundreds of (sacred) monkeys who scamper about the temple at night after the pilgrims and priests have departed.

The stupa has Buddha's eyes and eyebrows painted on. Between them, there is something painted which looks like the nose - but is the Nepali symbol of 'unity', in the main Nepali language dialect.
