The Moldova flag was officially adopted on May 12, 1990. Once part of Romania, the blue, red, and yellow tricolor is identical to the flag of Romania, reflecting the two countries' national and cultural affinity.

Struve Geodetic Arc | Moldova

The Struve Geodetic Arc is a chain of survey triangulations stretching from Hammerfest in Norway to the Black Sea, through ten countries and over 2,820 km. This helped to calculate the exact size and shape of the planet and marked an important step in the development of earth sciences and topographic mapping.

The original arc comprises 258 main triangles with 265 main station points. Of which 34  are included the Struve Geodetic Arc, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Chișinău is the capital and largest city of the Republic Moldova. Built of white stone this triumphal arch is similar in design to Paris’ Arc de Triomphe but much smaller. The triumphal arch was built in 1841 as a gift from the Russian Tsar Nikolai I. It is a symbol of the victory of Russia over Turkey in the war of 1806-1812 and the liberation of the territory between the Dniester and Prut rivers.

A Moldovan Monument: The Candle of Gratitude

The monument is built on the rocks over the Nistru River. It is considered as a very special work of art for another reason. It is built in the memory of the cultural monuments in Moldova that were destroyed in the past.

This national monument was the brain child of a famous Moldavian classical writer Ion Durta. This man always had a deep respect for the tradition and culture of Moldova. He wanted to pay homage to their ancestors who worked so hard to preserve the Moldavian culture.

“Time stands still when it passes through this monument. It is a silent witness of many hopes and agonies, dreams and hard works of many past generations.”

(middle) The Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis) is a member of the woodpecker family Picidae. There are four subspecies and it occurs in most parts of Europe and in western Asia.

(right) Campanula persicifolia or Peach-leaved Bellflower is a plant species of the genus Campanula. It can be almost one meter high. It is common in the Alps and other mountains in Europe.
