The flag of Dominica was officially adopted on November 3, 1978, when the country gained independence from the United Kingdom. The flag features the national bird emblem, the sisserou parrot.

Dominica is a lush green mountainous island located midway down the chain of Caribbean Islands east and south of Puerto Rico. The national dress of Dominica is the ‘Wob Dwiyet’.  

The dress is believed to have originated from Southern France and that style of dress became popular in the French West Indies towards the end of the 18th century. Today, Dominicans and other Caribbean islands take pride in wearing the dress on special occasions such the independence celebrations.  

The last Friday before Independence is Creole Day and all Dominicans will wear at least some variation of the national dress.

Dominica is a state, situated in the West Indies also called the Caribbean. Sometimes it is confused with Dominican Republic. Dominica is an island in the middle of the Caribbean chain of islands. On the North is the French island of Guadeloupe and on the South another French island - Martinique.

The island was discovered by Columbus on Sunday, the 3rd of November 1493 and was named after this day (in Latin "Dominica" means "Sunday"). Before that there lived Indians - Arawaks, who were later forced out by more militant Indians - Caribs. The Caribs still live on Dominica and are the last natives of the Caribbean Islands.

Many springs and small crystal clear rivers with waterfalls flow from mountains, covered with wild tropical vegetation. They form wonderful natural pools and lakes. Native people say, that the number of rivers equals to the number of days in the year - 365. Because of its great natural beauty Dominica is known as the "Nature isle of the Caribbean".

“Dozens of sulphur springs, bubbling pots and the famous Boiling Lake - wherever you are on the island, there's never a bit of hot water or volcanic activity far away! You may even catch the smell of sulphur in the wind... “

Dominica's Boiling Lake is situated in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park. It is filled with bubbling greyish-blue water that is usually enveloped in a cloud of vapour.

It is believed that the Lake is actually a flooded fumarole, a crack through which gases escape from the molten lava below, rather than a volcanic crater. The natural basin of the Boiling Lake collects the rainfall from the surrounding hills and from two small streams which empty into the lake. The water seeps through the porous bottom to the hot lava below where it is trapped and heated to boiling point.
