Guyana is located in South America. It borders Venezuela, Brazil, Suriname and the Atlantic Ocean. Guyana is known for its rich bio-diversity, particularly bird species. The inaccessibility of Guyana’s tropical rainforest is fundamental to the survival of some of the world’s most endangered species such as the Harpy Eagle, Cock of the Rock, Arapaima, Giant Otter, Giant Anteater, Jaguar and Black Caiman.

 

In Guyana, with more than 250 species of mammals and 1,000 species of birds, spreading across 275 waterfalls, four mountain ranges, eighteen lakes and numerous waterways, any wildlife adventure is possible.

St. George's Cathedral (1890) is an Anglican cathedral in Georgetown, Guyana and is one of the tallest wooden churches in the World.

Georgetown is the capital and largest city of Guyana.

The National Library of Guyana was founded in 1909.

Linden - Mining Town, Guyana

Linden, the second-largest town in Guyana, is a bauxite mining town 112 kilometres south of Georgetown on the west bank of the Demerara River. Linden is a company mining town. The opencast mine is 60-90 metres deep and is said to have the world’s longest boom walking dragline. The town is dominated by a disused alumina plant and scarred by old bauxite pits. Today Linden, is popularly known as the Mining Town.

In 2012 Guyana issued two sheets of four bird stamps. This one pictures the Anhinga bird, sometimes called Snakebird or Water Turkey. It is a water bird of the warmer parts of the Americas. The word anhinga comes from the Brazilian Tupi language and means devil bird or snake bird.

The Non-Aligned Movement Monument from Guyana

Guyana is a sovereign state on the northern coast of South America. Originally a Dutch colony in the 17th century, by 1815 Guyana had become a British possession. Guyana achieved independence from the UK in 1966. It is the only country in South America where English is the official language. 

The monument commemorates the 1972 Conference of Foreign Ministers of Non-Aligned countries when it was held in Guyana in 1972. The monument was unveiled in honor of the founders of the Non - Aligned Movement: President Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt, President Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, President Nehru of India and President Tito of Yugoslavia; the leaders who initiated the conference of Afro- Asian countries.
