The  United States Virgin Islands (USVI) are a group of islands in the Caribbean. The USVI consist of the main islands of Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas, along with the much smaller Water Island and many other surrounding minor islands.

Salt River Bay is located on the north side of the island of St. Croix. It contains the Columbus Landing Site, a National Historic Landmark that is the only known site where members of a Columbus expedition set foot on what is now United States territory.

The territory's capital is Charlotte Amalie, located on the island of Saint Thomas.

In 2012 the US Post Office issued a stamp picturing the Virgin islands flag. The last one released in the 60-stamp Flags of Our Nation series.

During the 17th century, the archipelago was divided into two territorial units, one English and the other Danish (Danish West Indies). Sugarcane, produced by slave labor, drove the islands' economy during the 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1917, the US purchased the Danish portion, which had been in economic decline since the abolition of slavery in 1848.
