Murano Island and Lighthouse | Italy

Murano is an island in the Venetian Lagoon, located north-east of Venice. It is actually seven islands connected by bridges, forming canals. The island has its own lighthouse.

Murano is famous for its long history of glass making. In 1291, all the glassmakers in Venice were required to move to Murano. In the following century, exports began, and the island became famous, initially for glass beads and mirrors.

Raspberry Island is one of the Apostle Islands in northern Wisconsin, in Lake Superior. The Apostle Islands are a group of 22 islands in Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes of North America. The lighthouse was built in 1863 and stand 40 feet tall.

Mohni Lighthouse is a lighthouse located on the Estonian island of Mohni in the Gulf of Finland. The original wooden lighthouse was built in 1806, and replaced with the 20 metre concrete structure in 1852.

Tower of Hercules | Spain

The Tower of Hercules is an ancient Roman lighthouse built on a 57 metre high rock, on a peninsula a few kilometers from the centre of Coruña, Spain. The tower served as a lighthouse and landmark since the late 1st century A.D.

Tower of Hercules is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Old Town of Galle | Sri Lanka

Founded in the 16th century by the Portuguese, Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th century, before the arrival of the British. It is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and South-East Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and South Asian traditions. Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Marhällan Lighthouse | Aland

The Åland Islands is an archipelago at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea belonging to Finland. It is an autonomous, demilitarised zone and is the only monolingually Swedish-speaking region in Finland.

Marhällan Lighthouse is located on a rock, 6 kilometres southwest of Mariehamn, capital of Aland Islands.

Runde Bird Island | Norway

Runde is an Norwegian island that has a population of 102. The island is connected by the Runde Bridge to the neighbouring island of Remøya.

Every year from February to August, more than 500.000 birds come to Runde for the nesting season. Around 80 species have been proved nesting here, and more than 230 species have been observed in total.

Split Rock Lighthouse | USA

Split Rock Lighthouse is a lighthouse located southwest of Silver Bay, Minnesota, USA on the on the rocky coast of Lake Superior. The events that took place in November 1905 prompted the construction of this lighthouse.

The Mataafa Storm, is the name of a storm that occurred on the Great Lakes on November 27–28, 1905. The storm, named after the steamship Mataafa, ended up destroying or damaging about 29 vessels and killing 36 seamen on Lake Superior.

Podersdorf am See is a market town in the east of Austria on the shore of the Neusiedler See. It is located very close to the Hungarian border. The economy of the town is based on tourism and quality wine making.

Podersdorf is located within the area of the UNESCO World Heritage site Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape. A cross border site together with Hungary.

In rememberance of Austrian musician Falco who would have turned 60 this year. Dont we all remember Rock Me Amadeus and Jeanny? Unfortunately he died in a car crash in 1998.

 The old stone California lighthouse stands as a silent watchman in the area known as "Hudishibana," near Aruba's northwestern tip. The lighthouse was named after the S.S. California - which sunk previous to its construction in 1910.

Isla de Lobos | Uruguay

Lobos is a small island located about 8 kilometres southeast of Punta del Este in Uruguay. Not to be confused with Lobos Island, part of Spain's Canary Islands. The island is home to more than 15,000 sea lions and 250,000 South American fur seals.

The origins of the lighthouse on this island date back to 1858. With its height of 59 meters, the tallest lighthouse of South America, you have a wonderful panoramic view of the island and the coast of Punta del Este.

Mikynes Lighthouse | Faroe Islands

The  Faroe Islands are an archipelago of 18 islands in the North Atlantic Ocean, located roughly in the middle between Norway, Scotland, and Iceland. The islands have a total population of about 49,000.

Mykines is the westernmost of the 18 main islands. While cruise ships occasionally stop on Mykines, bringing as many as 500 people on the island at any given time, only 10 people live here year-round. There is a tiny schoolhouse, and it is attended by exactly one child.

Tillamook Rock Lighthouse | USA

Tillamook Rock Lighthouse is a deactivated lighthouse on the Oregon Coast, situated on less than an acre of basalt rock in the Pacific Ocean. Construction started in 1890.

“Sea conditions necessitating the construction of the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse were notoriously brutal – so brutal, in fact, that no local workers could be found to participate in the project, as they believed leveling-off a small rock located a mile off-shore was obviously a foolhardy idea.”

Eldred Rock Lighthouse | Alaska USA

Eldred Rock Lighthouse is the oldest original lighthouse in Alaska. First lit on June 1, 1906 and one of the remotest lighthouses in North America, the Eldred Rock Lighthouse was built after some disastrous shipwrecks. Especially during the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush, when the Lynn Canal was full of steamships bringing miners to the Yukon.

This lighthouse is located on Hatteras Island off the North Carolina coast. Hatteras Island is a barrier island: a long, narrow, offshore deposits of sand or sediment that run parallel to the coastline.

Guia lighthouse | Macau

The Guia Fortress in Macau is a 17th-century colonial military fort, chapel, and lighthouse complex. The 90 metres tall lighthouse is over 150 years old and is still functioning today.

The complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Centre of Macau.
