Kosovo declared independence on the 17th of February 2008. The small south east European state sits between Albania, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro. The capital of the Republic is Prishtina, a city of around 500,000 people. The population of Kosovo exceeds 2 million.

Medieval Monuments in Kosovo is a World Heritage Site consisting of four Serbian Orthodox Christian churches and monasteries. The Monastery of the Patriarchate of Peć is a medieval monastery located near the city of Peć, in Kosovo.

I also received a card with this monastery from Serbia.

Ulpiana and Novoberda | Kosovo

Remnants of the Roman empire lie just 7 kilometres south east of Prishtina at the Ulpiana excavation site. The ancient city is believed to date back to the first century. At that time, the territories of Serbia, Kosovo, and portions of Macedonia and Bulgaria were known as the Roman province of Moesia Superior.

Novoberda was one of the biggest cities in Balkans and had a great importance. In 1400 it was the fourth largest city in Europe with a population of 60,000 (London had 40,000 at the time). It was regarded as one of the richest cities in Balkans because of its natural resources, and  was often called “the city of silver and gold”. All that remains today is the ruined castle, a derelict mosque and Byzantine era church.

Medieval Monuments in Kosovo is a World Heritage Site consisting of four Serbian Orthodox Christian churches and monasteries: Dečani Monastery, Patriarchate of Peć Monastery, Our Lady of Ljeviš and Gračanica Monastery.

 

The monastery in the village of Gračanica (near Pristina) is one of Kosovo's best religious monuments. It was built in 1321 by the legendary king of Serbia, Milutin Nemanjic.

(left) Issued by UNMIK in 2007, Monumental Art –Architecture. UNMIK is the officially mandated mission of the United Nations in Kosovo. In 2001 UNMIK started issuing its own postage stamps.

As of 1 June 2012, the Republic of Kosovo has received 93 diplomatic recognitions as an independent state.

“Western powers agreed to stop overseeing Kosovo in September 2012, four years after it proclaimed independence, but NATO troops and EU police will continue to monitor the former Serbian province still troubled by occasional ethnic violence.”
