The Laurisilva of Madeira is one of the largest surviving area of laurel forest, a previously widespread forest type. This primary laurel forest can be found in Madeira Natural Park.

Laurel forests need an ecosystem of high humidity, such as cloud forests, with abundant rainfall throughout the year. Laurel forests typically occur on the slopes of tropical or subtropical mountains, where the moisture from the ocean condenses so that it falls as rain or fog and soils have high moisture levels.

Laurisilva of Madeira is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Funchal is the largest city and the capital of Portugal's Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Funchal is the capital and main city in Portugal's Autonomous Region of Madeira. More and more new shopping centers and supermarkets are opened all over the island of Madeira to satisfy the consumers' 'needs'. Yet, there's nothing like the ambience of a typical market!

Originally, these regional markets were set up for selling flowers but with the time they expanded to all kinds of agricultural products and local food specialties, such as ‘bolo de caco’ bread, grilled chicken and wheat soup, to be consumed there or to take away.

The Madeira archipelago is located in the Atlantic Ocean, southwest of continental Portugal and is an European autonomous region of Portugal, made up of the island of Madeira, Porto Santo, the Desertas and Selvagens (Wild Islets), the last are uninhabited. The capital and largest city is Funchal located on Madeira Island.

The archipelago comprises the major part of one of the two Autonomous regions of Portugal, the other being the Azores located to the northwest.

Faial is a small picturesque village located on the northeastern coast of the Island named after a local tree known as faia ‘myrica faya’.
