Laxey Wheel | Isle of Man

The Laxey Wheel, also known as Lady Isabella, is the largest working waterwheel in the world. The wheel is built into the hillside above the village of Laxey in the Isle of Man.

It  was built in 1854 to pump water from the Glen Mooar part of the Great Laxey Mines industrial complex. It was named "Lady Isabella" after the wife of Lieutenant Governor Charles Hope, who was the island's governor at that time.

Douglas | Isle of Man

Douglas is the capital and largest town of the Isle of Man, with a population of about 28,000. The city is located at the mouth of the River Douglas.

The ship is a 96-metre wave piercing catamaran and the largest vessel of its kind in the Irish Sea. It is one of the ferries operating between Liverpool and Douglas.

Ramsey (or Rhumsaa in 'Manx') is a coastal town in the north of the Isle of Man. It is the second largest town on the island after capital Douglas. Ramsey has one of the biggest harbours on the island.

The head of state is Queen Elizabeth II and is represented by a Lieutenant Governor. Defence is the responsibility of the United Kingdom.

"A triskelion or triskele is a motif consisting of a triple spiral exhibiting rotational symmetry. The spiral design can be based on interlocking Archimedean spirals, or represent three bent human legs."

The flag of the Isle of Man is a triskelion, composed of three armoured legs with golden spurs, upon a red background.  It has been the official flag of Mann since 1 December 1932.

Douglas is the capital and largest town of the Isle of Man, with a population of about 29,000 people.

On the right you see part of the interior of the Gaiety Theatre & Opera House. The memorial stone is in honor of Sir William Hillary. He led the movement to form The National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck in 1824.

A horsecar or horse-drawn tram is an animal-powered streetcar or tram. It is one of the earliest forms of public transport. The Douglas Horse Trams have been in existence on the Isle of Man since 1876.

The Manx Electric Railway was built between 1893 and 1899 and connects the Island’s capital, Douglas, with Laxey in the east and Ramsey in the north. Two of the trams in use are the oldest regularly operated tram cars in the world.

The Isle of Man is a self-governing British Crown Dependency, located in the Irish Sea between the islands of Great Britain and Ireland. The Isle of Man is home to about 80,000 people.

Peel Castle is situated on St Patrick’s Isle. Originally a place of worship before becoming the fort of Magnus Barefoot – an 11th century Viking King of Mann.
